King Parakramabahu the Great was the most successful ruler of the Polonnaruwa Kingdom for nearly 150 years. Historical sources state that King Parakramabahu who conquered the kingdom of Polonnaruwa after a great effort did a great deal of work during his reign. Many people think of the splendor of the kingdom of Polonnaruwa in those days when they saw the great creations built in the prehistoric era.
The Parakramabahu Palace is the largest building in Polonnaruwa. There is an opinion that this building called 'Vaijayantha Palace' in the Culavamsa was built to a height of 7 storeys at that time. Today, only the three-story ruins of the palace remain.
The Mahavamsa also states that at that time there were 1000 rooms in this palace. It is unbelievable that there are thousands of rooms in the palace, but the sources of history cannot be ruled out all at once.
It is believed that some parts of the palace were gilded in the past.
Entering the palace through the main entrance on the ground floor, you can enter a large courtyard. Going further you will find a hall that is 102x42 feet long and wide. There are still traces of wooden pillars in the hall. It can be seen that there were 3 rows of rooms with about fifty rooms in a row around the ground floor. There is also a hallway outside the rooms that were used as watchtowers in those days.
